The Elderly and Delirium

Two of the things you will notice if your elderly parent is suffering from delirium are sudden changes in behavior and their mental state. They may be hyper-alert, startle more easily or be overly sensitive to their surroundings. They can also become quite agitated or may wish to sleep for longer periods of time. They may be unable to follow a conversation or stay focused. Or their conversation may become incoherent. They may also have a decreased appetite or become incontinent. Becoming lost in places they know well is not unusual in this situation. They can experience disturbances in perception such as not understanding what is happening around them. They may not recognize familiar people. There may at times be paranoia or unrealistic fears and possibly emotional outbursts.

My mother, in her last couple of years, had several episodes of delirium and hallucinations. This is very frightening for the person experiencing them and it was also frightening for her family members, especially before we understood the reasons for them. There were several times where she saw people that were not there and carried on conversations with them. She would be adamant that the person existed and became very angry and disoriented when we tried to explain to her what was happening.

Some of the causes of delirium and/or hallucinations are:

- side effects and possible interactions of some medications;
- pain;
- infections or severe illness (with my mother it always happened when she had a bladder infection which is extremely common with elderly women);
- low oxygen levels;
- lack of sleep;
- side effects from anesthetics;
- poor nutrition and/or lack of hydration.

If this should happen to your loved one, it is important that they receive medical treatment as soon as possible. These changes in the person are sudden and are not connected with dementia.

The following are some of the things you can do if your elderly parent is suffering from delirium:

- the person by name to get their response. Remind them of the day, time and where they are;
- keep sentences short and simple;
- let them know that they are being looked after and are safe;
- if the person wears glasses, make sure they are clean and being worn. This includes their hearing aides as well. These things help them to become orientated;
- try to control excessive noise and over-stimulation. This cannot always be the case, particularly if they are in a hospital environment;
- ensure that dentures are in and that they eat regularly and drink fluids frequently;
- ensure that treatment for the cause of delirium is being treated and followed up on.

Recovery time may vary from days to several weeks or longer depending on the cause of the delirium. Comfort measures are important for the patient as well as having the support of family and friends nearby.

How to Preserve the Dignity for Those Spoon-Fed Elderly

Eating is a vital thing to do to survive. From being a child, we are fed through our parents specifically our mothers. As we grow old, we are the one who made it in order to survive.? For most of us, eating is not just for survival, having tasted the delicious meal and satisfied is a great pleasure of being a human. Satisfaction is the primary motive of being alive. And as part of being satisfied we have the capability of feeding ourselves physically. Then how about when the time comes when we need some one to feed us? The world of elderly care has changed considerably in recent years. Elderly care used to be synonymous with nursing homes. But that is far from the truth today. Now, we have a wide scale of elderly care homes available to seniors, from full time nursing facilities to assisted living communities to hands-off independent living communities, and everything in between.

So, how do you know what type you need? Just consider a few basic questions.

1) Does your loved one have a major medical problem that requires constant oversight? Than you definitely need skilled nursing care. But if not…

2) Does your loved one require help doing things that the rest of us do by ourselves? I’m talking about basic Activities for Daily Living? Do they need a hand putting on their clothes in the morning, or bathing, or moving in and out of their bed? If so, don’t think “nursing home” right away. Rather, think assisted living. Plano Assisted Living homes are designed for those types of seniors exactly: people who aren’t necessarily in bad shape from a medical standpoint, but who need help with daily life. Who cannot live alone. These are communities that generally offer help with any of those activities, plus things like housework, transportation, and cooking. Most of them offer three meals a day in the common dining room, and they encourage interaction through social events throughout the week. In short, you can be independent without being alone.

3) If your loved one does not need help with basic activities, and wants independence, then a retirement community or a continuing care facility would be great. Independent living is a standard retirement community where seniors have help nearby if they need it, and they are secure. A continuing care community goes one step further and allows the senior to transfer their living situation to a place with more care if the time comes when they need it. This allows the medical community to adapt to the needs of the senior as the senior’s life changes.

Plano elderly care has plenty of senior care facilities no matter what kind of care you are looking for. To find the housing that fits your needs, put your information in the box at the top of the screen and start searching for retirement or assisted living homes in your area today!

Resentment for an Elderly Parent

by Barbara
(UK)

I am an only child of 55 who cares for her elderly mom of 95. She has carers as I live a long way away but I am on the phone everyday to her. I have battled a high risk of breast cancer this year and still have to deal with her depression due to her bad arthritis, bad eye sight, etc.

I am giving up working full time as I have to accompany her to hospital and stay with her after wards. Old peoples selfishness I cannot deal with. They are not the only ones with health issues. I have a bet with my husband that I would be drawing my pension and my mom will still be here. She thinks she has not got a lot of time left!

8 Ways To Help Care For Your Elderly Parents

Today, improvements in living standards and advances in medical care have given us increased life expectancy and longer life-spans, now many people are living well into their eighties and nineties. This results in a large proportion of middle-aged people having to care for their elderly parents.

Providing care for an elderly parent or friend can be an extremely difficult task, both emotionally and physically. It involves a lot of time and effort and often creates stressful situations and decisions within the family.

Please find below 8 helpful tips to consider when caring for your elderly parent or friend.

1. Get the whole family involved - Try not to make decisions alone, get your whole family involved in discussions in making decisions. Involve your parent or person who requires the care if possible, it's important to take into consideration their wishes, opinions and feelings during this process.

2. Prepare in advance - It's important that you prepare for the future as early as possible, making arrangements for legal documents such as wills, financial documents, insurance policies etc are up to date and kept in a safe place.

3. Assessing you parents needs - Identifying your parents needs is crucial, look into the different areas where they maybe struggling to cope, such areas may include grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning the home, personal hygiene. In some cases it may become impossible to care for your parent your self, in such cases you may have to look for some Home Care help or in some situations re-housing your relative in a residential or nursing home maybe the right choice.

4. Keeping track of things - Keeping a good record of your parents medical history, medicines, allergies and allergic reactions is a good idea, this will be helpful when discussing things with your doctor.

5. Educate yourself - Speak to your parents doctor about instructions for giving medicine and tablets, such as when drugs should be taken, how often, what are the best foods to eat and avoid when taking the tablets etc.

6. Don't try and do it all yourself - Sharing the responsibility of giving care at home with other members of your family will make sure things run more smoothly, it's important a single person is not over burdened with the physical and emotion stress alone.

7. Be aware of any warning signs - Always look out for any warning signs such as weight loss, forgetfulness, poor attention, reduced mobility or physical impairment.

8. Don't be afraid to seek for outside help - Providing care can be very stressful both physically and emotionally and is an extremely demanding responsibility. If you are unable to continue to provide the help needed for your parent anymore then there are many options available to you such as, nursing services, home care, local agencies, residential homes, respite care and nursing homes. A good idea is to ask the advice of your local GP for information on local agencies which can help assess you and your parents needs.

Caring For Your Elderly Parents - Keeping Them Safe While They Still Live At Home

We will not stay young forever no matter how hard we try and how many anti-aging agents and treatments we use. It is inevitable in the end that aging is going to win. This holds true for your parents as well. As you age so do they, just with a couple of decades head start. It's important to remember that your parents as they get older are going to need a little more help and you may need to be there for them, just as they were there for you when you were growing up. It's important to remember that your parents are going to want to stay in their own homes for as long as they can and you should try your best to make sure they can do that by trying to help provide them with a safe environment so that they can do this.

Make sure that you know what all of your parents medical issues are and understand that they may have multiple so it's important that you know about all of them. You also should know who their doctor is so that you can contact the doctor in case you need to. Remember, that even though a lot of things are changing for your elderly parents, as long as they can take care of themselves, such as simple daily activities, they should be allowed to be able to stay in their own homes.

You should also go to their home and check out their living environment. Make sure that you check out all of the rooms they have and will be having activities in. According to whatever ailments they might have, you may have to make a few minor adjustments in order to make some areas safer than others, especially in the bathroom where slips and falls are quite common especially with the elderly. Add safety bars in the shower or tub and if they happen to have stairs that have no railings, then consider adding some railings for them to make it easier for them to navigate. Also make sure that there is good lighting in the entire house and that all of their locks on their doors are in good working order.

If their home is cluttered, it's a good idea to make sure that you try to clear some of the clutter away for them. Take out any throw rugs that might be in the way of their walking paths because they could easily trip on a rug that might be rumpled up and this could end in an unnecessary injury. If they are using a walker, cane or even a wheelchair, make sure there is plenty of room in the home to be able to maneuver in the house with these objects.

Check and make sure that all fire hazards are taken care of. Make sure that their stove is in good working condition and is safe to cook on. Cut down on them having to cook meals every day on the stove by occasionally cooking for them or making extras at home and inviting them over or taking them a few meals cooked a head of time that all they will have to do is warm up in the microwave. You should also convince them to stop using space heaters if they are, these can be huge fire hazards.

Make sure that you call them often or just stop by on occasion to make sure they are doing OK and to see if there is anything you might be able to do for them. Never just assume that everything is going great just because they haven't called you. They may be too proud to ask for help or unable to get to the phone to call for help.

If you notice any kind of mental or physical changes in them, it's important that you call their doctor right away, it could be nothing but then again it could be very serious. The elderly tend to have quick and sudden changes happen to them and without warning so it's important to pay close attention and get help if needed.

Keep all of their important phone numbers posted wherever there is a phone so that they do not have to be searching for a number when they need to get someone to help them or need advice on something.

Elderly Home Devices - Stair Lifts and More

There are a lot of things to look forward to with age. Spending more time with the family, having a life less focused on work and getting away from the stress of a 9 - 5 job. While there are a lot of positives, age can provide a new set of challenges that make parts of everyday life problematic. Thanks to many of the new technologies that are constantly changing the way we live our lives, overcoming obstacles that present themselves as we grow older is becoming an easier task.

Mobility difficulties start to spring up with age. At first it could be some joint pain travelling up the stairs, but that can quickly worsen until getting around the house is a nightmare. Getting a residential stair lift installed means that older relatives don't have to change their home to work around their difficulties. They shouldn't have to put up with pain or suffering travelling within their own home. Keeping their space accessible allows them to retain their independence without suffering.

Residential stair lifts are easy to install, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Even circular stairs can be fitted with a stair lift. They are designed in a way that protects your loved one by automatically starting and stopping based on sensors, buttons, or a remote control. It essentially acts as a stair elevator, and makes living in a two or three storey house feasible even for older age groups. In some cases you may even be eligible for funding assistance to install a mobility stair lift.

If a family member ever suffers from a sudden medical issue, takes a fall or injures themselves, you want them to be able to contact emergency services as quickly as possible. The thought of an elderly loved one unable to alert somebody for help is a horrifying one. To keep peace of mind and in case something does go wrong, personal emergency response systems and medical alarms have been developed and are a great investment for any older relatives. Retaining independence with age is important, but keeping family members from worrying that something could go wrong is crucial too. Personal emergency systems let seniors live their lives how they want to and means family can be comfortable in the knowledge that if something does go awry, emergency services are only a button press away.

Don't let age be a burden. With a bit of investment and a few practical safety devices, overcoming the challenges that arise with age is easy.

Geriatric Care - Top Summer Health Risks to the Elderly

The summer is great for many of us, as it gives us a chance to become reacquainted with the great outdoors after months of sitting at home. Camping and beach trips are great for most involved, but two particular sects need to be paid careful attention. The first is babies and children. The second, and sometimes overlooked, is our elderly.

It's easy to think of these folks as being able to handle what they used to, but despite their age and wisdom, we must be prepared to step in and avert any of the possible unique risks which summer might present. The most common dangers usually revolve around the sun, but there are other hazards of which we might not think.

The sun
The number one summer risk to the golden age population is the sun. The heat from the center of our universe can wreak havoc on senior citizens, as represented by the amount of stories about many elders living in non-cooled areas during this time. It's important to ensure our seniors get plenty of time in air conditioned rooms so they don't suffer from heat stroke.

Heat stroke is one of the leading causes of death for seniors. The best way to prevent this is to stay indoors during the sun's afternoon peak. If they need to work outside, then they should take plenty of breaks and be sure to drink plenty of fluids, even if not thirsty. Sunscreen and protective clothing should also be utilized as a precaution.

Food poisoning
Over 70 million cases of food poisoning are reported every year during the hot months, and many more go unreported. Most commonly, these reports stem from eating foods that have sat out too long, like dairy products or items containing mayonnaise. Seniors need to take care in what they eat at picnics and other outdoor functions, as the risks are greater to their generation.

Swimming pools
Pools are not the biggest threat, but one that should be kept in mind. Even if our patriarchs were once great swimmers, they should remember their body has weakened as they've aged. If they decide to take a dip, watch them to see if they are out of breath or tired. If so, they should take a break, and should not overexert themselves.

Hiking, poisonous plants and insects
Nature presents its own share of risks to the elderly. Older people are more at risk to skin rashes or allergic reactions, due to decreased immunities. They should avoid plants unless they are sure they're not poisonous. Long hikes should be discouraged, especially for those who are prone to falls or just had surgery.

Insects, especially mosquitoes, are another threat. Mosquitoes are notorious for carrying and transferring various diseases, some of which result in the manifestation of various neurological disorders. Bug spray and other insect repellents should be carried and applied appropriately.

Our geriatrics need proper care, and they should not risk injury or worse ailments in the pursuit of fun in the sun. Taking care this summer will make the season even more enjoyable. Be careful these next few months.

Tips on How to Keep Elderly People Safe at Home

Are you worried on how to keep your grandparents or elderly parents safe at home? To learn more about elderly care and ways of keeping them safe inside your house, read the article below.

Caring for elderly people is not that simple because they have special needs that require careful consideration and understanding. Aside from providing them nutritious food, care and love, you need to keep them safe always, especially when you are at work or out of your house.

Tips on how to keep your elderly loved ones safe at home:

- You should remove things which can cause them to fall or to slip like loose wires, rugs and loose electrical cords. Be sure to examine inside the house and to keep away all possible trouble items. Avoid waxing the floor because it could also cause slippage and fall. If you want to make changes on your flooring, replace slippery floors with tacked down carpet.

- Make sure that you have stable handrails in your stairs if you live in a multi-level house with stairs. Investigate and assess if your handrails are not loose or shaky, otherwise, hire a carpenter to fix them immediately and to stabilize all the shaky handrails inside the house.

- Secure your bathrooms and make sure that your showers and bathtubs are slip-proof, otherwise put some bath mats. Install handrails in the showers and bathtubs to help them get in and get out easier.

- Do not put regularly used and necessary items in top shelves to avoid slippage and fall when they are trying to reach them. Make sure to place them just around the corner. If ever you place things on top shelves, be sure to have a step stool in place.

- Make sure that there is adequate lighting in all areas of the house, especially in hallways and in areas which are frequently visited by members of the family. Adequate and proper lighting are needed to elderly individuals who have cataracts and diabetes problems. You can clean your existing lighting fixtures or replace defective bulbs. Place furniture pieces near outlets to ensure that electric cords are hidden. If possible, install additional wiring to limit the distance between the appliance and the outlet. You can also opt for occupancy sensor light switch, a device that automatically turns on when there is movement.

- Be cautious and beware of hazards caused by heating system. Elderly people are highly vulnerable to gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning because they spend majority of their time inside the house. To ensure their safety, make sure to have your home checked by professional heating systems technician regularly. Install a carbon monoxide detector inside the home to detect if it is already in its dangerous level. Research shows that carbon monoxide has been the primary cause of accidental deaths among older people.

- Check your furniture pieces regularly and make sure that they are all firm and safe to avoid accidents from happening. Do not give them beds with elevated platforms to prevent falls. Check for any signs of unstable furniture items, like broken legs of chairs. If you spot any furniture defects, have it repaired or have it replaced immediately.

- Make sure to keep toxic products like detergent liquid and chlorine in separate and safe storage areas because of the possibility that they may confuse them with condiments due to their blurred vision.

By following all the tips and suggestions above, you can be sure that your elderly loved ones are safe in your house.

Tips on How to Care For The Elderly and How to Keep Them Safe at Home

Are your grandparents or elderly parents living with you? Are you having difficulties in caring for them at home?

Caring for elderly loved ones is challenging and is not that easy because it requires lots of patience, dedication, compassion and love. With the special needs they have, you have to be sensitive enough to know what they want and know how to make them comfortable, happy and healthy.

Caring for elderly individuals is not similar to caring for sick or unhealthy people because they require lots of concern, dedication and understanding. It is sometimes challenging, especially when you have problems at home. It is not as simple as caring for other members of the family because they have special needs that require special attention. As you know, some elderly care is stressful and demanding and if you do not have the right attitude, for sure you will give up on caring for them and you will place them in nursing homes. If you find it exciting and fun to care for a baby, it is the opposite for senior care because there are times that you are stressed and burned out.

Their needs vary as they grew older and they become irritable and hard to understand, thus, some people find it impossible to deal with their attitude. In this situation, we need to be patient and to show them respect. Having them at home and caring for them gives family members the opportunity to spend quality time with them in the remaining days of their lives.

If you are busy and you do not have enough time to care for them, you can always hire a caregiver to assist you in taking care of them, otherwise, you can place them in nursing home facilities or geriatrics centers.

Tips in Taking Care of Elderly Individuals:

* Establish your routine and schedule. Make sure that each member of the family takes part in the responsibility. If you have classes, you have work or you go to the supermarket on specific days of the week, let other family member or a friend to come over and watch over the elderly patient. Let your children, niece, nephews and grandchildren to be involved in the responsibility in looking after their elderly parents. Sharing the responsibility reduces stress and burden on your part.

* Socialize. Never forget to socialize and have social interactions. Make sure to bring them outside the home or to the park to interact and to socialize with other people. Bear in mind that regular interactions are encouraged to people of all ages unless they are sick or ill.

* Take time to find out the benefits entitled to elderly individuals like Social Security and Medicare. Try to consult your lawyer on how you can avail these resources on behalf of your parents or grandparents. By having other financial resources reduce the burden on your part.

* You have to be patient, compassionate, thoughtful and respectful. They are not children and some of them have illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease that need special attention. Always remember that they are human beings who can be hurt too.

All the tips and suggestions mentioned above can help you in caring for an elderly member of the family.

The Elderly Should Not Sleep Over Six Hours Every Day

Sleeping is not only a physical need, but also a competence. Nowadays, it has become a big problem for the elderly.

It is said that the last thirty years of life is closely related with trouble sleeping. The older a person is, the more difficult sleeping becomes. With the increase of age, the quality of sleeping is lower and the time of sleeping is shorter. It is the normal change of the human body. Experts hold the view that the elderly do not need to pursue long sleeping. They suggest that sleeping of six hours long is adequate. If the elderly sleep more than six hours, their heart beats would decrease to an abnormal rate. The metabolism slows down and the activity of blood circulation is slow. Sometimes, their muscles would become so loose that the elderly could not walk normally. Therefore, the elderly should not sleep over six hours every day.

An experiment conducted by a professor at Stanford University also gives some advice about sleeping to the elderly. The professor investigated a great number of the elderly. He divided them into two groups. The first group was asked to change the sleeping habits. The members should sleep late and get up early. Meanwhile, people in the second group could sleep as they pleased. The results have shown that the sleeping quality of the first group was better than that of the second group. The American professor also has suggested that the elderly should sleep five hours in the night and take a one-hour-long nap at noon.

Compared with that of the young people, the sleeping of the elderly is much worse. The elderly would usually wake up several times in the night. They get up early in the morning. Experts say that there is no need worrying about such phenomena. These phenomena are the normal results of aging. What the elderly should to is to have a positive attitude. They should be aware that the condition of sleeping varies with the age. Time is not the only criterion to judge the quality of sleeping.

When their sleeping is not good, do not treat is as a disease. Experts do not suggest the elderly to eat hypnotics. If the elderly do have sleeping troubles, ask doctors for advice. Or they can turn to milk for help. It is said that a substance called hydroxide can calm the nerves and help people go to sleep quickly. Besides, when old people feel tired, they are not suggested to take sleeping as a rest. They could go for a walk, play some small games or have some entertainment. Such a method not only makes their bodies recover in a short time, but also exercises their bodies and slows down the aging process.
